Independent Reading Journal Prompts
Choose a journal question to answer for each reading journal that is due. Your response must be written in complete sentences and should be one paragraph. One paragraph should be at least 5 sentences. The journal response is graded out of 5 points.

Fiction Questions
1. Who is your favorite character in your book? Why is this character your favorite? Describe why you like this character. (What does he or she do? What are his or her interests?)

2. What is the big problem your book? Which characters are involved? How do you think the problem might be solved?

3. What questions do you have about your book so far? What are you wondering about? (This could be about the characters, the setting, the problem, etc.)

4. Describe two character traits for a character in your book. Explain why you think the character has that trait by using evidence and examples from the story.

5. What is the theme (message) of your story? Use evidence from the story to prove your answer.

6. Predict what will happen next in your book. To do this you must briefly explain the situation, make your prediction, and tell why you predict his.

1. Describe three new facts you learned from your book.
2. What is the most important fact you learned in this book so far? Why do you think it is important?
3. Describe how you can use the information you learned in this book in your own life.
